2025 Lecture: Dr. Imani Perry
Born just nine years after the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow Imani Perry was instilled from an early age with a strong instinct for justice and progressive change. Perry’s work reflects the deeply complex history of Black thought, art, and imagination. Her latest book, Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People, is a surprising and beautiful meditation on the color blue and its fascinating role in Black history and culture from indigo to Louis Armstrong and beyond. Perry’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, New York Magazine, and Harper’s, among other publications. She earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from Harvard University, a JD from Harvard Law School, an LLM from Georgetown University Law Center, and a BA from Yale College in Literature and American Studies.

The Clyde Kennard Lecture Series

Clyde Kennard
Clyde Kennard was the first African American to attempt enrollment at the segregated Mississippi Southern College in the 1950s (this institution, later becoming The University of Southern Mississippi, was integrated in 1965).
In honor of its namesake, the lecture will commemorate Clyde Kennard’s experience as an unsung civil rights activist, who sparked progressive changes in the movement for racial integration of higher education throughout Mississippi and the nation at-large. Key goals for the lecture:
- Examine educational equity for underrepresented minorities in higher education and in P-12 schools
- Present interdisciplinary studies about the experiences of Black people
- Promote campus and community partnerships to create sustainable and equitable relations
